Emmanuel ‘Cathedral Eyethu’ Fundraising Campaign
Emmanuel Cathedral:
This is the name of the Catholic cathedral located in the Durban Central Business District (CBD).
Eyethu:
This is a Zulu phrase meaning “ours" or “our own".
“Our Cathedral-Eyethu":
The phrase “Our Cathedral-Eyethu" is used by the Archdiocese of Durban to emphasize the church’s significance as a shared spiritual space for the local community.
The campaign refers to Emmanuel Cathedral in Durban, South Africa, and is a campaign or initiative to highlight the church as “our cathedral" and encourage community at large to be involved in supporting it’s upkeep and mission.
Cathedral Eyethu was launched in 2022 due to the dire need for repairs to the Cathedral which marked 120 years of age in 2024. The building needs intensive renovations. As an aged antique building it is costly to renovate and restore it to its old glory.
Thanks to “Our Cathedral-Eyethu" we’ve been able to create a safe spiritual space in the Durban CBD that reflects the glory of God and the heritage of the Archdiocese of Durban.
The project entailed pressure cleaning of the roof and walls, waterproofing, roof painting, painting of windows, and creating an additional parking.
This was done under the supervision of structural engineers and highly recommended contractors from the Amafa group.
